EUROPEAN DREAMS FOR TOMORROW’S GERMANY

Germany’s election results open up an innovative perspective, also for Europe, if Liberals and Greens will be able to converge on a common pragmatic and pro-European approach, agree on a common program and take a joint political initiative towards the two other parties, the most voted ones.

The meeting points between Liberals and Greens in terms of values and programs are many more than, respectively, with the People’s Party and the Social Democratic Party: a preliminary political agreement between the former two could thus favor a new and innovative perspective both for Germany and Europe.

If a virtuous compromise on the economy and for a non-radical environmental policy is found, while agreeing on a high-level candidate for the role of Chancellor, the way will be easy and smooth to make the best out of the German election results.

The role of Germany in European integration has always been a protagonist: Angela Merkel, even though sometimes with some slowness, has always favoured European stability and solidarity, well beyond the positions of the CDU, not to mention the Bavarian CSU.

We do not know how the leaders of the two main German parties would act on the matter, but the federalist aspiration inherent to the ecological and liberal culture would be an absolute guarantee for the endurance of Ventotene pro-European spirit, which neither Olaf Scholz, nor Armin Laschet seem to be able to champion.

In this way there would be the possibility to ensure a female leadership within the Chancellery, in the wake of Merkel, such as Annalena Baerbock, leader of the Greens. Perhaps Liberals could agree to support Baerbock in power  for the first half of the legislature, and then pass it on to Lindner, their own leader, in a sort of relay race. That could thus help the FDP to face the subsequent elections in an incumbent position. In short, this could be an epochal political turning point that would put an end to a decades-long political duopoly.

The hope is that the FDP and Greens will develop this conviction, for the good of Germany and Europe, and countries like Italy, that look at Germany as the locomotive of the EU, to which we own the merit of the New Generation EU.

This prospect could also benefit the Greens and the Italian Liberals, who  now do not get good electoral results.
